What educators are saying

I loved doing this activity while learning about how information travels to the brain. Distracted driving is REAL LIFE. The kids enjoy it while having their eyes opened!!!
As a virtual teacher, I am always trying to find hands-on activities that students can do at home. We were able to complete with no issues. Students enjoyed it!

Description

Use a REAL WORLD APPLICATION to add engagement to a nervous system lesson. This reaction time activity shows kids how being distracted affects their ability to react. Even if your students aren't driving yet, they will be soon - and this is a lesson they'll remember!

Take a peek at the reviews of this lesson - kids LOVE this activity!

Find this resource in our Nervous System Unit!

In this activity, students will:

  • READ a background section to learn about the dangers of texting and driving. They'll also learn that reacting takes time because messages have to travel from neuron to neuron through the nervous system.
  • Make a HYPOTHESIS about how being distracted (or not) affects reaction time.
  • Follow a SIMPLE PROCEDURE using only rulers to test their reaction time and a partner's reaction time. They'll collect data as they do this non-distracted and also distracted.
  • ANSWER follow-up questions.
  • Make a CLAIM based on EVIDENCE about texting affecting reaction time.

NGSSMS-LS1-3
Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. Emphasis is on the conceptual understanding that cells form tissues and tissues form organs specialized for particular body functions. Examples could include the interaction of subsystems within a system and the normal functioning of those systems. Assessment does not include the mechanism of one body system independent of others. Assessment is limited to the circulatory, excretory, digestive, respiratory, muscular, and nervous systems.
NGSSMS-LS1-8
Gather and synthesize information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories. Assessment does not include mechanisms for the transmission of this information.
