Overview:
This lesson is a Google Slides presentation that aligns with a worksheet provided for students to follow along, take notes, and eventually compose a practice thesis statement. This lesson is generally completed in 1 day.
Standard W9-10.1a
Introduce precise claim(s), distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and create an organization that establishes clear relationships among claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and evidence.
Teacher instructions:
In this lesson, students will learn and document the definition of an argument, claim, and evidence/reasons before composing their own practice thesis statements. This lesson may then be applied to students choosing from a variety of topics to produce a clear thesis statement.
Hand out the assignment below titled “Writing a Thesis Statement” (or click the link above to print)
Using the presentation link here, project and go through each slide with students while teaching/instructing on the information given. Students will follow along and take notes/write in key pieces of information.
Finally, students will use a practice topic given at the end of the presentation to choose a side of an argument and write out a claim with 3 reasons on their assignment.
