Description

This 65-page workbook for Cressida Cowell's How to Train Your Dragon includes vocabulary, comprehension, NINETEEN literature skills exercises, and a final assessment. The novel study is available in print and digital (with Google Slides) and has a compatible MODIFIED version for students with special needs. Answer keys included.

(For PRINT ONLY black + white PDF, click here.)

Each chapter has TWO pages of work with fill-in-the-blank summaries (cloze reading), follow-up comprehension questions, and a literature skill focus. Skills covered throughout the workbook include:

  • making predictions
  • character analysis
  • setting
  • alliteration
  • similes
  • personification
  • onomatopoeia
  • cause/effect
  • foreshadowing
  • sequencing
  • making inferences
  • providing text evidence
  • compare/contrast
  • several connecting-to-the-story exercises

The book is divided in half, for two sets of 12 vocabulary words. Vocabulary work includes definitions, synonyms, word work, crossword puzzles (online links for digital use), and vocabulary usage. There's a mid-book comprehension review, a movie vs book comparison guide, and an end-of-book test also included in the workbook.

The workbook is available as a black + white PDF, convenient for printing and great for coloring and drawing activities. It's also available as a full-color PDF for those who have the ability to share PDFs digitally, like with Kami, or to upload all or portions to EASEL by TpT. I've converted the color version of the workbook into Google Slides with text boxes and movable pieces already in place. No prep for you!

A MODIFIED version in print and digital is included, adapted with word banks, sentence prompts, short-answer options, and condensed matching. SPED students and struggling learners who’d benefit from modified curriculum can complete this compatible version ALONG SIDE THEIR PEERS completing the regular version.

NOTE: The zip file contains PDF documents for printing and two links that will prompt you to "make a copy" of Google Slides. Slides will download right to your Google Drive. Google account required for this feature.

For just a quick & simple resource for How to Train Your Dragon that's NOT AN EXTENSIVE NOVEL STUDY, try comprehension guide fill-in-the-blank summaries on TRI-FOLD BOOKMARKS or GOOGLE SLIDES. Content from these resources (chapter summaries) are included in the workbook.
