Description

How the Brain Learns to Read, 2nd Edition by David A. Sousa - A Book Study

Purpose of this Book Study: Reading does not just happen. Reading has to be strategically and systematically taught. Before, during, and after instruction, readers need opportunities to practice and improve from a knowledgeable teacher. Reading is essential for success in our society, but not all teachers understand what the brain does to ensure readers are successful. Sousa explains how the brain learns to read and provides instructional strategies that will support effective learning. How the Brain Learns to Read shares research related to how young people acquire language and then use that when reading. Educators will better understand how the brain learns to read so they can make informed, systematic instructional decisions.

How to Use: This book study can be implemented asynchronously or collaboratively - whole staff PD/workshop, grade-level PLC, independent PD, and/or instructional coach PD with PLC. The required book for this book study is How the Brain Learns to Read, 2nd Edition, by David A. Sousa.

What You Are Getting: Your purchase includes a download of the Facilitator Guide in a PDF. Within the PDF, you will access the link for the online modules and the link to the participant reflection journal. The website can be linked in a learning management system for staff to engage in discussion boards using the reflection questions in the modules. The Facilitator Notes include the purpose, implementation possibilities, materials needed, and procedures for making your book study a success.
