What educators are saying

I teach benchmark, and we are in the "corn unit" I will be out of town, and needed a PBL to keep them engaged. This fit the bill perfectly! Glad I didn't have to reinvent the wheel to get this project going for my kids!
Excellent resource to guide students through the process of creating a garden and all the steps required to "think through" the process.

Description

This is a multi-faceted project based learning project that has the students simulate building a large garden/small farmlet, harvest produce and honey, rent space at a farmer's market, purchase ad space, and eventually sell their products.

It takes the students through all of the steps, and can be worked on individually as an extension exercise or as a whole class to add interest to your math workshop. The level of difficulty can be adjusted by allowing students to use calculators, or by asking students to show all work.

The length of the project can be adjusted by excluding or including some of the steps. The full project can serve as an excellent supplement to a 4th through 6th grade class for several months if completed to the fullest.

The skills covered are numerous, but include multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, graphing, area, perimeter, volume, addition and subtraction of money, place value, computation with large numbers, mental math, rounding, etc.

Please check out the preview document to get a feel for the skills covered!

Also available in a metric version!
