Description

As a history teacher, I struggle with how Thanksgiving is typically portrayed as a holiday celebrating a big happy feast between Pilgrims and Native Americans when that’s really not the whole (or even accurate) story.

I think it is important for students to know the REAL story of Thanksgiving, which is why I am sharing my History of Thanksgiving resource with you! Go beyond telling the white-washed version of Thanksgiving this year and teach the TRUE and WHOLE story of Thanksgiving!

This set of activities is designed to be an easy and accurate, no-prep approach to the study of Thanksgiving. No more looking for websites, primary sources, and videos to go with your lessons, this has it all included!

What’s Included

Digital versions of TWO fantastic resources! Here is a breakdown of each, click the link to see the FULL resource preview:

Video Notes and Magic Art Activity

- History of Thanksgiving Video Questions

-Video Questions Magic Reveal Art Activity

-Students will use their video questions to complete a magic art picture reveal that correlates with the content of the video-GREAT way to self-check answers!

Reading Comprehension-Color by Number-Source Analysis

-Reading Comprehension

-First part of this in reading in 5 paragraph chunks where students identify the main idea and respond to a short answer question

The second part of this is a re-read in full paragraph form (or you can choose for them to JUST do this part) and then they will respond to 10 questions

-When they answer the 10 questions, they will then complete a color by number to CHECK their answers! You will have the choice as to whether you want your students to do this on PAPER or DIGITAL (video directions for digial coloring are included)

-Source Analysis

-First source analysis is doing a comparison of perspectives

-They will read a letter from Edward Winthrop that will give them a first-hand separatist perspective and then they will listen to a read-aloud that will provide them with a first-hand Wampanoag perspective-GREAT discussion starter!

-Second source is a primary source analysis where students will read a letter from Sarah Hale. This si the letter that she sends to Lincoln advocating for a day of "Thanksgiving" which leads to the official start of the holiday.
