What educators are saying

While I and the students enjoyed this resource, I believe it might be better for grade 10 and up. Some students found the idea of the subconscious difficult to understand. Although that doesn't reflect on the resource, more so my decision. Great resource to introduce surrealism!
This was great for opening their eyes to surrealism. The included worksheet made the lesson planning easy! I showed Dali’s “Destino” animated short to wrap-up.

Description

I have always struggled to find art history articles written in kid-friendly language, which is what prompted me to create this product. This product includes a 1000-word article written in language that is ideal for grades 7-10, student worksheet/Google activity, and answer key.

Teach this lesson in-person or remotely by sharing the included Google Activity

The 3 page article briefly explains the history of Surrealism, addressing connections to WW1, connections to Psychology, Automatists vs Veristics, etc. This article does not give unnecessary information (as this subject can often get heavy and confusing), and really just gives students what they need to know in order to understand the movement. Once this information is given, the article goes into an in-depth analysis of the visual characteristics of Surrealism in a clear and concise way. After reading, students will be able to explain and identify 5 of the most common themes in Surrealism: Juxtaposition, scale, metamorphosis, repetition, and impossible actions.

The accompanying student worksheet asks 8 factual questions about the article, 1 analytical question where students have to explain why an image is Surrealism, and 1 application question where students have to use one Surrealist theme in order to create an illustration, and then to explain it.

If teaching remotely, this product includes a link to a sharable Google activity where students answer the same questions, but in a digital format.

After reading and completing the worksheet students will be able to:

- Explain the history of Surrealism

- Make connections between Surrealism and other sciences

- Articulate the different schools of Surrealism

- Identify Surrealism artists

- Identify major themes in Surrealism

- Analyze Surrealistic artworks

- Apply Surrealism themes in their own artwork

LESSON INCLUDES:

  • 1000-word (3 page) article with images .pdf & .doc
  • 10 question (2 page) student worksheet .pdf & .doc
  • Answer key pdf
  • Teaching Guide
  • Link to Google activity for remote learning
  • Remote learning instructions
