Our New York streets were made of dirty cobblestone with rats scurrying across the rocks to fight a man for a morsel of bread. The alleyways smelled of rancid butter, rotting potatoes, and dead dogs and cats. I’d wandered the streets for several months looking for work in order to pay rent to live with nineteen others in a shabby apartment in the Bronx. Rent was due. My landlord made sure I was aware of it, but I’d exhausted all the spare change that used to jingle in my pocket.
