This is a 5 day lesson using rap lyrics (and a few rock lyrics). I use this to introduce my poetry unit.

Day 1 - This worksheet involves practicing identifying similes, metaphors, and personification as well as interpreting their meaning. There are 25 different verses for students to work on.

Day 2 - This worksheet reviews assonance, and students practice finding assonance in song lyrics.

Day 3 - This worksheets reviews alliteration and consonance. Students practice finding alliteration and consonance in song lyrics.

Day 4 - This worksheet reviews 10 basic poetic devices, and gives numerous examples from popular music, mostly rap. The 10 devices are: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, consonance, assonance, onomatopoeia, repetition, and rhyme.

Day 5 - This activity introduces students to wordplay/puns. In this worksheet, students work together to find the puns and multiple meanings from 26 different rap songs. There is also an example done for the students.

Be warned, there is some harsh language in a few of the lyrics (you can remove them if you want). I teach at a Continuation High School and have had great success with these activities. These 5 days are definitely some of my favorite times teaching.

There are google drive links on each pdf, so that you can edit as you see fit. All the work has detailed answer keys.
