Higher Level Vocabulary Building Using Memory Pictures (SAT Vocab)

Each week in my classroom, I try to introduce 1 higher level vocabulary word to my students using the slides/handouts provided in this resource pack. Vocabulary-building is so crucial to becoming both a better reader and writer!

I introduce students to each higher level vocabulary word, its part of speech, and its definition. Then we focus on the memory picture that I have provided for each word. The memory picture and/or memory phrase is designed to aid students in creating a memory link between the word and the definition. For example, with the word "abase" the picture is meant to trigger the thought of a block that needs to be lowered to become a base of a block tower. The definition of the word abase is "to physically lower."

We review the "Super Sentence" that is also provided in this packet for each word. After these vocabulary mini-lessons, students are encouraged to use the response sheet provided to create their own "Super Sentences" using the word of the week. These response sheets may be compiled to make student mini-books or placed on a flip ring for quick reference.

I also often follow up these instructional vocabulary lessons by reading a book related to the word of the week. For example, the week that we learned "celerity," we read a biography about the famous runner Wilma Rudolph.
