Description

Using cardstock paper, can you build an exact model of the box Henry Brown used to mail himself to freedom?

We are all about integration in my STEM building and blending historical events with STEM challenges is a great way to make the topics we study in social studies more engaging and interesting for the students. I am currently working on developing more of these social studies based STEM challenges. This one is focused on the extraordinary journey of Henry "Box" Brown to freedom!

This engineering challenge activity is one of many that I have created to use in my classroom! I place these challenges, one per table, and the students rotate around the room in order to complete them. There are no right or wrong answers, many different solutions will work! You could also rotate these challenges through a social studies or science center or complete them as a whole class activity. I store everything in a dollar store gift bag or plastic tub!

Time to engineer history!
