Description

This lesson makes an excellent lesson for an American Literature course as it exemplifies the realism period of literature. The themes that emerge throughout the progression of the texts – patriotism, fear, honesty, and family – are perfect for framing the mini unit and having the students dig deeply into the anchor text: Hemingway's "Solider's Home." Additionally, the unit provide opportunity for covering such skills at characterization, symbolism, theme across texts, cause and effect, and more.

Use this lesson, also, as an excellent Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, or Independence Day lesson.
