Center: 12 colorful photos of things that are familiar to the children, and are usually either very heavy, or very light. The children can sort them onto 2 labeled category mats. Print on cardstock and laminate if desired.
Worksheets: The children cut and paste b/w pictures, similar to those in the center, into the 2 categories of "heavy" and "light" on each worksheet.
Other activities: The picture cards are big enough to use as flash cards in a small group session, discussing the concepts and vocabulary of heavy and light. Also, comparisons can be made by holding up 2 of the pictures, and asking which is probably heavier, and probably lighter. Explain that you are thinking how the objects would be/exist “in real life”, to help the children transfer the idea of the picture to something they have experienced previously. Have lots of real items available for the children to handle, compare weight, and talk about.
