What educators are saying

I was pulled from in person K to online 5th… I’ve been dying to use this book! The materials completely align and make readers think. Easily adaptable to Google Docs/Forms.
I was new to teacing 4th and 5th grade. Thank you from a kindergarten teacher who had to teach an unfamiliar grade.

Description

This unit perfectly coordinates with Kadir Nelson's beautiful work "Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans." Each chapter contains multiple choice and text-based open-ended responses as well as a graphic organizer thinking map.

COMPREHENSIVE ELA PRACTICE! Multiple skills are covered throughout the unit, including narrator's voice, figurative language, theme, context clues, main idea and details, summarizing, informative writing, and critical thinking.

END OF UNIT WRITING ASSESSMENT: Included are two final activities for students to complete after they are done reading the whole book- a writing prompt as well as a sorting circles activity.

VOCABULARY INCLUDED: A comprehensive list of key academic and content-specific vocabulary terms as well as their morphological and semantic links is included.

ZERO PREP! PRINT AND GO! The student workbook can be copied directly from the file and handed out as a booklet or teacher can choose to copy and distribute chapters individually.

WHOLE CLASS or SMALL GROUP! This resource can be used whole group or makes a great small group or center long-term activity. Students need only this workbook and the original text and they'll have all they need to complete the activities. This is easily leveled up or down, depending on the amount of teacher-provided scaffolding.

ANSWER KEY INCLUDED! A separate file includes the teacher answer key for easy grading. This also makes a great emergency sub plan.
