Description
If you want an engaging activity to welcome your students back to school in January (or right before you let them loose for the holiday break in December!), check this out! It is a reader's theater script written for fifteen characters.
The main idea of the Reader's Theater is recognizing how New Year's is celebrated in various parts of the world. Most of the characters have names that can be used with boys and girls alike, making it easy to assign parts.
Each character has at least two speaking parts- at least one shorter response, and one longer response where they tell about a New Year's custom that takes place in another country.
The script is 5 pages long. My guess is that it is at the readability level of typical 3rd-5th graders, but take a peek at the preview to decide for yourself. (The preview contains three of the 5 pages.)
Then, as an added BONUS, I have created three follow-up activities you can do with your students, if you wish. The three worksheets include:
- Students write the name of the continent beside each country.
- Students match the New Year's custom description to the country where it takes place (checking basic levels of comprehension).
- Students respond to open-ended questions (higher levels of comprehension).
Check out the PREVIEW!
********This resource is available in TWO FORMATS:
- TRADITIONAL PRINTABLES- Print the PDF and distribute paper copies to your students to complete.
- TPT EASEL ACTIVITY- This colorful digital option allows you to save paper. Students read the script from a device. Plus, students can highlight their lines with the highlighting tool!
