Description
Looking for a Halloween writing craft or October bulletin board activity? This descriptive paragraph writing craftivity is perfect for Halloween or any time descriptive writing practice could use a dose of fun! It also makes for a festive October bulletin board display. There is no explicit reference to Halloween made, so even students who do not celebrate the holiday can fully participate in the activity.
To prepare the activity, copy a variety of included monster heads, mouths, eyes, and feet for students to choose from and writing paper for each student. Students will choose their desired pieces and build a monster, placing the writing paper between the monster's head and feet. I copied onto colored paper to save time, but the activity will also work well copied onto white paper. Students can color their own monsters should you choose to go this route. Either way, each student's monster is unique!
After building their monsters, students can use the provided descriptive paragraph organizer and creepy and creative adjective list to plan their descriptive writing.
Several writing paper options, including a fill-in paragraph, are provided to help you differentiate the activity and meet the needs of all your students. Final copies can be written onto the paper attached to directly to their monsters.
Alternatively, you can display the monster and writing pieces separately and then have some fun reading aloud the monster descriptions and challenging students to try to match them to the corresponding monsters!
Two rubric options are also included should you wish to formally grade your students’ writing and/or have them self-assess their work.
