What educators are saying

This is one of the best things I have ever purchased on TpT. I didn't need to add anything except the candy and baking soda. I used it with two sections of gifted and two sections of gen ed. My administrator stopped by and was really impressed as well.

Description

★ Halloween Science: Acids, Bases, pH of Halloween Candy★

The purpose of this lab is to determine if popular Halloween candies are acidic or basic (alkaline). The students will follow the scientific method to test using pH paper and baking soda as indicators. About This Activity:
This lab is intended to be used to determine whether Halloween candy are acids or bases and to identify them on the pH scale. After reading the purpose and research for the lab, the students will create a hypothesis for each substance that will be tested. They will record their observations, complete analysis questions, and write a conclusion.

In My Classroom:
I designed this lab for my gifted and talented 5th graders, but have used this lab with 7th grade regular education students, as well. My students love this lab because it helps them to visualize acids and bases using an indicator and a chemical reaction. The results of this lab showed that many of the popular Halloween candies were highly acidic. The analysis questions are designed to help student analyze what this means for teeth ("Don't eat too much candy, you'll get a toothache!") and lead to interesting class discussions.

Included In This Activity:
♦ teacher guide
♦ 4 page lab report

Additional Materials Needed(not included):
♦ pH paper, baking soda, Halloween candy*, warm water, containers, something to stir with
*try to get a variation of gummy candy, chocolate candy, sour candy etc.
