Check out what other teachers are saying about this product:

"This is my favorite resource I have purchased from TPT EVER! I purchased it last year as a long-term sub and was so excited to use it this year, as a first-year teacher! Sleepy Hollow is part of 4th grade curriculum but benchmark did not come with a lot of material associated with it, so buying this made it so much more fun for my kiddos. This is one of my favorite stories and we get to do it around Halloween time! Myself and all of my students have loved using this!"

- Kayla, 4th Grade Teacher ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Love it. It doesn't focus on comprehension questions as much as character traits, which is a breath of fresh air. It has been well planned and the idea of writing an epitaph is great and looks cute displayed (hint parent teacher night). Thank you for your hard work."

- Tammy, 5th Grade Teacher ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I used this to supplement a mini-unit studying The Legend of Sleepy Hollow leading up to Halloween. We were learning about character traits and being able to analyze Ichabod and Brom was very helpful to understanding protagonists and antagonists. I plan to use this next year as well!"

- Adventures in Sixth, 6th Grade Teacher ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What's Included:

This pack includes:

  • 4 Graphic Organizers
  • Lesson Directions
  • Activity Directions
  • Power Point {about epitaphs, Washington Irving and MUCH MORE!}

Lesson:

1) After reading an abridged version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (found on line), the students talk about what an epitaph is (since the version of the story that I have doesn't tell us what happened to Mr. Crane.)

2) Students discuss specific character traits of Brom and Ichabod and you compare/contrast each on T-chart (that you give to children, or create on anchor chart paper).

3) Students come up with 5 PHYSICAL TRAITS of Brom, 5 PHYSICAL TRAITS of Ichabod, 5 PERSONALITY TRAITS of Brom, and 5 PERSONALITY TRAITS of Ichabod.

4) Show students this PowerPoint of famous grave plots (Frank Sinatra, Jesse James, George Washington, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, etc., etc.) and discuss how these famous peoples' epitaphs reflected physical or personality traits

5) Students choose 3 personality traits, and 3 physical traits of either Brom or Ichabod, and they are given a small container of Play Doh.

6) Students "carve" epitaph with toothpick or paperclip into tomb-stone shaped playdoh using the 3 personality and physical traits of Brom OR Ichabod.

7) Let PlayDoh dry over night - wah-lah! A tombstone! VERY spooky! VERY fun!

Why do I need this?

  • It's ready to print and present,
  • Big kids love Play Doh activities, too!
  • It meets rigorous standards,
  • Students are engaged, learning, and having fun!
