Halloween Persuasive Writing Project - Halloween Costume Contest

Can't get your students to stop talking about their Halloween costumes? Harness the excitement by developing their persuasive writing skills with a fictional costume contest!

This resource includes:

• 2-day lesson plans for the Halloween Costume Contest writing project
• Small group warm-up activity to engage students and review persuasive/opinion writing skills (Halloween costume cards)
• Project assignment page (explaining the project to students)
• Student planning and project pages
• Grading rubric
• Example of a completed project

You can finish this activity in one to three class periods, depending on the time you have available. I have included a suggested lesson plan sequence for two days. Each student begins with a choice of two planning pages. One includes a graphic organizer, and the other has lines for writing. Completing the planning page will help students design their costumes and will allow you to assess persuasive writing skills before beginning the final project.

The final project choices are differentiated. The first option has room for the costume design and writing all on one page. For the second option, students draw their costumes on a full-size sheet of paper. The writing can be written on the lined paper provided or typed on the computer. This allows for more room depending on the amount of information you want students to include.
