Description

Do you need a meaningful activity to keep your students engaged on Halloween? Make learning fun with this Halloween-inspired, interactive game to review parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adjectives). This PowerPoint presentation will reinforce your students' learning of grammar concepts while also meeting Common Core expectations for reading informational text. Updated version now has a PDF with a link to a Google Slides Presentation!

This game has several review slides and three rounds of game play. In the first round, students identify nouns in the context of each sentence; the sentences increase in difficulty and complexity with the inclusion of multiple nouns and abstract nouns. In the second round, students identify verbs and/or verb phrases, and in the third round they identify adjectives in the sentences.

The PowerPoint and Google Slides presentations include the following:

  • review slides
  • rules for the students
  • game slides
  • teacher instructions
  • key

This activity makes excellent guided practice after instruction on these parts of speech. Then, consider following the game with independent practice.

Research shows that students often learn best when they can move, and this activity motivates students further by tapping into their love of sports. Using heterogeneous groups to play a game with friendly competition is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students and reward them for their success.
