How long will this Halloween crack the code math mystery take?
This activity is intended to be review. During whole group, review the skills quickly before passing out the math mystery. Then, watch the video or read the mystery to the students! I prefer to do these packets in partners. For me, it can take my class anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour on average. If it's your first math mystery, the timing may take a bit longer until students understand the format.

Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. Understand the following as special cases:
Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
