What educators are saying

This was a great activity for my students to work on the week of Thanksgiving. It not only allowed them to practice some figurative language, but they also were able to do some creative writing.

Description

Your yearbook or journalism students will enjoy practicing headline-writing skills and reviewing figurative language with this "Horror"ible Halloween Headlines lesson. It's no prep and easy to use, too!

Student Experience: Your yearbook or journalism students will love the Halloween-themed lesson, and you will love that they are brushing up on crucial journalism skills. First, they will review figurative language terms. Then, they will read news articles with the headlines removed and exercise their own writing skills by developing headlines for each article. Last, they will be challenged to choose one of the stories from the task and write the follow-up news story as if they have investigated it. I did use this lesson with my yearbook staff, but it would be a fun lesson for any class wanting something fun and challenging for Halloween!

**Subject matter might not be appropriate for younger students. That's why I've listed this resources for high school students. You know your students best. My 10-12 students had a blast!**

Included:

  • Link to figurative language video tutorial
  • 5 abridged news articles
  • Real headlines from the actual articles
  • CCSS
  • Super simple sub sheet
  • All pages PDF and digital for Google

All the work is done! Just print and go!
