This pack includes up to 3 weeks of materials depending on your class periods and how you use what's included: Use them all or use pieces to provide differentiation to your different groups. This mini Halloween unit with poetry, nonfiction, fiction, research, and writing will help you SURVIVE the holiday season while your students THRIVE!

Student Experience: If you are looking for quick and easy ideas to use in October to keep your middle or high school English students on task and engaged, then look no more!  With a focus on haunted houses and the supernatural creepy crawlies you might find in abandoned spaces, your students will be captivated by the first spooky bell ringer. Students will read poetry and try their hand at selling a haunted house in a real-world project. Then, they will read a short story paired with a nonfiction text that makes your spine crawl knowing there could be truth to the mysterious. Last, they will have the chance to research myths and legends in their own state and/or town. Every lesson in this Halloween-themed mini unit is standards-based, classroom-tested, rigorous, and grade-level appropriate for high school level ELA students.

Classroom success stories from other teachers who have tried this resource:

♥ "Use this resource in my APLit class for a fun, but also educational, activity. It worked really well because we'd been doing poetry! They liked it and had fun. Thanks!"

♥ "This is great. I printed one poem on large post it paper. I am having the students work in groups and annotate the poem. Then each group has a different question. We will come back as a whole group and discuss each questions."

♥ "This poem is great and I was able to use your questions for a test prep course! Thank you!"

♥ "Really fun lesson for the Halloween season! A great review for narrative poetry. Thanks!"

♥ "What a great way to make research interesting for my students."

♥ "I was gone for a few days around Halloween and left these as sub plans for my Freshman. Super fun and no complaints about boring plans from kids! Yay!"

♥ "Awesome and unique activity. My students really enjoyed the story and learning about the Winchester House."

♥ "My students loved this. They could not believed the misfortune that befell the hapless Ivan! Thanks for an engaging and very useful lesson."

♥ "Everything you need! I was a little short on time on prepping for today, so I actually ran with this sight unseen! It turned out fine. The questions are good test-prep...if only the reading on the actual tests could be as engaging as the readings in this product."

♥ "Excellent source for introducing my students to the idea of text synthesis!"
