This resource will not only teach you about the philosophy and structure of guided reading but will also provide you with the printable resources to create and organize your own guided reading binder.

1. Guided Reading Binder Assembly Directions- 8 pages

In this section, I give detailed directions for how to set up your reading binder.

2. Guided Reading- 200 pages

This resource is filled with everything that you need to become the guided reading guru at your school! This resource is ideal for first through fifth-grade teachers.

Resource includes:

• All About Guided Reading: Guided reading at a glance, characteristics of a guided reading lesson, structure of a guided reading lesson (a breakdown of before, during and after reading), class record templates, explanation of how guided reading fits with reading workshop and a balanced literacy approach, and tips about organizing your guided reading materials and building a classroom library. Resources to explain exactly what guided reading is and how to implement it effectively in your classroom.
• Guided Reading Groups: Resources and templates to help you form, organize, and keep your guided reading groups flexible. Information about how to create flexible, traditional guided reading groups, strategy groups, and groups based on student interests is included. There are many different templates for you to use to create your own guided reading groups and reading rotations.
• Guided Reading Bulletin Board/Binder Display: Creative and colorful posters for you to print and display in a binder, or as a bulletin board. Examples show how you can organize the readers, title of the text, and level.
• Guided Reading Lesson Plan Templates: Templates break down a guided reading lesson plan by days and before/during/after reading. Guidance is given about what to include in a general lesson plan for guided reading (regardless of the level). There are fiction and non-fiction prompts you can use to guide your lesson. Pictures give you ideas on how to organize your own lesson plans.
• Guided Reading Schedule: How to create a guided reading schedule, tips about creating a schedule, and templates for you to use to create your own guided reading schedule.
• Running Records: Information about what a running record is, how and why it is important to take them, running record symbols and miscue analysis, and templates for you to take your own running records.
• Reading Conferences: Steps for having a successful reading conference, examples of reading goals, templates for a reading conference schedule, and setting student reading goals. Black and white and color printable awards for your students to take home to celebrate their growth as a reader.
• Anecdotal Records: Guided reading log templates are included and explained as a way to track student data.
• Guided Reading Activities: Many engaging and unique ideas are shared, to keep your readers motivated and excited for guided reading groups. Some ideas include making connections game, guided reading goodie bag game, and retelling games for fiction and nonfiction passages. There are fun printables (like a guided reading license!) that you can create with your readers.
• Reading Response Activities: There are printable resources geared toward K-2 and then 3-5. A reading response journal, for grades 3-5, focuses on the following for comprehension: cause/effect, character changes, visualizing, character inferences, and metacognition. A journal template is included. A guided reading journal, for grades K-2, focuses on book introduction, story elements, story events, mental images, and reader response.

3. (Editable!) Reading Binder Cover Pages- 37 pages

This is a POWERPOINT file, which means that you will be able to insert a text box and type in your own cover binder titles. Some titles I like to create for my binder include a personalized cover page with my name, guided reading schedule, guided reading groups, anecdotal records, reading conferences, guided reading lessons, etc.

4. Comprehension Posters- 10 pages

These clean, simple, and colorful posters are great for a bulletin board display. This file includes 10 different reading strategies that you can refer to in your guided reading lessons.

5. Guided Reading Teacher/Student Venn Diagram- 19 pages

This is a great lesson to teach when you are implementing guided reading groups at the beginning of a new school year. This interactive lesson gives the opportunity to teach the expectations of the teacher and the students in a guided reading group. I like to use two hoola hoops to create our Venn diagram, just like shown in the picture of the resource. There are 22 different expectations for your students to place in the correct spot of the Venn diagram. “Teacher, Student, Both” titles are also included for you to place in each component of your Venn diagram.

6. Reading Prescription- 28 pages

Guided reading just got a bit more interesting! Dress up in your favorite doctor gear for this fun activity! Your students will love meeting with the doctor during their “routine” reading check up. Turn your typical reading conference or guided reading group into an “office visit” where you diagnose a “cure” for each student’s reading aliments. This would be fun to do during a goal setting session, during a review of data, or a typical guided reading lesson or reading conference. This resource includes detailed directions for implementation, colorful posters to print for display, reading prescription templates for the “doctor” to fill out for his/her patients. Also includes a doctor reading prescription art project. Students use the body templates and clip art to make the doctor and write a reading prescription listing the doctor’s orders for the reading ailments.
