What educators are saying

This was wonderful to use with my Grade 6 students. They were intrigued by being detectives and had many opinions about what really caused Great Zimbabwe to be abandoned!
Such a fun, engaging way to dive into this civilization. Students really dug into the material and had good discussions at each station. Thank you!

Description

Perfect for lessons about the African empires, this investigation activity makes learning about Great Zimbabwe educational and engaging! Your students will try to crack the mystery of Great Zimbabwe through a crime scene investigation case file activity that encourages historical and creative thinking. Perfect for lessons on ancient civilizations, African empires, and world history, this resource makes history come to life!

A visually engaging case file with comprehensive background readings on the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, life in Great Zimbabwe and its engineering, and more is provided. Four leading theories about why the city was abandoned are presented, and student detectives will view supporting evidence and take detective notes on what they learn. They will then answer the reading comprehension response questions, complete a timeline activity, and draw their own hypothesis about the abandonment of Great Zimbabwe based on historical evidence and the theories in the case file! A bonus letter writing extension activity is included as well.

This investigation activity can be used as a printable packet activity, or as an engaging stations classroom activity with groups! Teacher and student notes are provided, along with an answer key for the background reading comprehension activity.

This activity is provided in both ready-to-print color and black and white versions.

This resource makes learning about Great Zimbabwe and the African empires highly engaging and is a great supplement, introduction, or reinforcement activity to any lesson! This activity can be used throughout the year, but also works great in connection to Black History Month!
