Description
This activity is designed to help students with graphing systems of linear inequalities (or for writing the inequalities from graphs). This activity also gets students up and about.
Purpose of activity is to allow students to practice while giving them the ability to self-check, thus ensuring students are practicing the correct procedure.
This activity can be worked 2 different ways
Place the 10 cards on the wall around your room. Students pick any card to begin with. To prevent students from all starting together, I will have students number off. They should graph the system from the bottom of the page. After graphing it on their own paper, students look around the room for a graph that matches theirs. Then they graph the next problem. They should continue until they return to the card they started with.
Included are 2 versions of this activity.
- One with 10 cards for use as a walk-around activity
- A shorter version with only 5 cards great for table work, bell work or use as a review.
To help with grading, I have included 2 student answer sheets(per version): One that includes graph paper, and another with just boxes.
Can be used for differentiated activity
I have found that this activity work great with the average student. It helps them see that they have worked the problem correctly. If they can't find the answer then they know they have made a mistake. This also helps reduce the constant "Am I working this correctly?†, giving you more time to work individually with struggling students.
I have also found that some Special Ed student struggle with this activity. Walking around the room and mingling with other students can bother some students . For these students I use the smaller handheld version. Another problem I have had is Special Ed students getting overwhelmed with too many problems. For these students I use the smaller 5 card set. This way they are doing the same activity but it isn't as long.
