Description

Traditionally used for rhetorical analysis, both HISTORY and ENGLISH classes can use this convenient graphic organizer to assess comprehension of a text's inciting occasion, author's purpose, target audience and speaker in non-fiction, literary non-fiction, poetry, short stories, novels, and drama.

SOAPSTone requires students to think critically to identify textual evidence that supports their analysis of a text's (S)peaker, (O)ccasion, (A)udience, (P)urpose, (S)ubjects, and (T)one.

This graphic organizer can be used as a homework assignment to ensure students pre-read their text and have a basic understanding that can be built upon during class time.

This wonderful acronym was originally invented by the College Board for Pre-AP and AP level rhetorical analysis on the AP US History, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Literature and Composition exams, but I modified it's characteristics to support my learning objectives and varied student levels as needed.
