What educators are saying
Description
On January 5, 2022, Mrs. Darby reported her Coach purse missing from her classroom after 8th period. Inside the purse was $1,500 cash and a brand-new iPhone 13. One her students, Steven, is accused of stealing her purse with the cash and phone. Should Steven be indicted for theft?
This fun and engaging activity has students take the role of grand jurors and go through 9 pieces of evidence before finally voting on whether to indict Steven. The nine pieces of evidence are:
- 1. Surveillance video
- 2. Police report
- 3. Reciept
- 4. Report Card
- 5. Criminal History
- 6. Victim Statement
- 7. Suspect Statement
- 8. Statement of Principal
- 9. Eyewitness Statement
The activity includes a student worksheet and example answer key- though note- this activity depends on the students and can have different correct answers depending on how they vote. I have left the evidence debatable so that there is not a clear cut answer on guilt or innocence to ensure students will have solid discussions on if it makes Steven look innocent or guilty.
Included in the bundle are the pieces of evidence listed above (PDF/Word/MP4) and I have also made a website where students can go and view the evidence if your students have internet access. Teacher instructions are also provided.
