Grade 7, Unit 5: Mental Health Literacy (Ontario Health)

The Grade 7, Unit 5: Mental Health Literacy activity packet is designed to meet both the overall and specific expectations outlined in the 2019 Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum document.

Focus of the Unit:

This resource is based upon the single specific expectation for the Grade 7 Mental Health Literacy strand. The focus of the lessons and activities is on what mental health is and what mental illness is. Students explore how everyone has mental health but not everyone has mental illness. Students also explore situations where individuals might not be in the best state of mental health but that this does not mean that they have a mental illness. Students also explore what some possible signs are of mental health problems and understand how they can help to take care of their own mental health.

The specific expectations this resource addresses are as follows:

• D1.6: Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between mental health and mental illness and identify possible signs of mental health problems.

There are 8 lessons included in this packet. Each lesson includes a full-length lesson plan complete with three distinct parts (setting the stage, core learning activity, and lesson consolidation). The lessons included are:

There are 3 readings included in this packet along with 19 activities, 2 exit cards, 2 self-assessment grids, 2 grading grids, and 1 rubric. Please do not feel you have to use all lessons in the order they are presented in, or all of the lessons in general. You can pick and choose the readings, activities, and lessons you wish to do with your students as you see fit.

The activities and readings presented in this resource are also presented in a Google Slide format so that they can be used digitally.

There are 3 answer keys included in this resource. The answers for the activities are open ended, and are dependent on student experience, and the way in which the activity is completed with students.
