Description

The Grade 7, Unit 2: Personal Safety and Injury Prevention activity packet is designed to meet both the overall and specific expectations outlined in the 2019 Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum document.

Focus of the Unit:

The focus of this resource is on how students can help to keep themselves, and others safe while using digital technologies. Students explore the importance of keeping themselves and others safe in the online realm and also explore the consequences of their actions whether unsafe for themselves, or harmful to others. The second portion of this resource has students assess the potential impact of various types of bullying, abuse, exploitation, or harassment. Students explore how these behaviours can impact themselves, and others, and ways in which these types of harmful behaviours can occur – whether online or in person.

Specific Expectation Addressed:

The specific expectations this resource addresses are as follows:

  • D1.1: Describe benefits and dangers, for themselves and others, that are associated with the use of computers and other digital technologies and identify protective responses.
  • D2.2: Assess the potential impact on themselves and others of various types of bullying, abuse, exploitation, or harassment, including homophobic bullying or harassment and other forms of identify-based bullying, and of the type of coercion that can occur in connection with sexting and online activities, and identify ways of preventing or resolving such incidents.

Lessons Included:

There are 8 lessons included in this packet. Each lesson includes a full-length lesson plan complete with three distinct parts (setting the stage, core learning activity, and lesson consolidation). The lessons included are:

Lesson 2.1: Introducing the Unit

Lesson 2.2: The Use of Technology

Lesson 2.3: Safety with Technology

Lesson 2.4: Bullying

Lesson 2.5: Abuse and Harassment

Lesson 2.6: Sharing Our Knowledge

Lesson 2.7: Exploring Situations

Lesson 2.8: Bringing it Together

Activities, Readings, and Assignments:

There are 3 readings included in this packet along with 18 activities, 3 exit cards, 2 self-assessment grids, and 3 rubrics. Please do not feel you have to use all lessons in the order they are presented in, or all of the lessons in general. You can pick and choose the readings, activities, and lessons you wish to do with your students as you see fit.

There are 3 assignments included in this packet. The assignments are:

Assignment 2.1: Informational Brochures

Assignment 2.2: Personal Safety and Injury Prevention Reflection Journal

Are there Answer Keys Included?

There are NO answer keys provided in this packet. The reason is that the majority of the activities and assignments are open-ended, and student responses will vary.
