Grade 7, Unit 1: New France & British North America 1713-1800 (Ontario History)

In the Grade 7: New France & British North America, 1713 - 1800 unit, students will explore the social, political, economic, and legal changes in Canada between 1713 and 1850. Students will explore the experiences of and challenges facing different groups in Canada during this period. Students will then be asked to compare the experiences and challenges to the experiences of present-day Canada. Students are also introduced to the historical inquiry process and are asked to apply this inquiry process to investigate different perspectives on issues in early 18th and 19th centuries.

This activity packet provides you with lessons, activities, readings and rubrics that can be used to address the following Grade 7 History overall expectations:

- Analyze aspects of the lives of various groups in Canada between 1713 and 1800, and compare them to the lives of people in present-day Canada.

- Use the historical inquiry process to investigate perspectives of different groups on some significant events, developments, and/or issues related to the shift in power in colonial Canada from France to Britain.

- Describe various significant events, developments, and people in Canada between 1713 and 1800, and explain their impact.

This packet also addresses the following big ideas:

- Understanding the experiences of and challenges facing people in the past helps put our experiences and challenges into context.

- Different groups responded in different ways to the shift in power in Canada from France to Britain.

- The significance of historical events is determined partly by their short- and long-term impact.

There are 59 activity worksheets, 21 readings, 7 self-reflection cards, and 8 rubrics. Several of the activities presented in this packet can be used as assignments, but it is up to your discretion to use them as such. There are also 8 exit cards presented in this packet that can be used at the end of a lesson to identify what students have learned about the concepts addressed in this unit.

What assessments are included?

There are 8 rubrics to assess student understanding of the concepts addressed in this unit. Please note that there are no answer keys provided in this packet, as many activities involve an open answer and it is up to you to determine whether students have appropriately demonstrated their knowledge. There is one quiz midway through the unit. There is no final test as students had previously demonstrated their understanding of the unit concepts in a variety of other ways.
