About the Content

Students are asked to explore interactions between and among biotic and abiotic components in the environment. Students develop an understanding that an ecosystem is a network of interactions among living organisms and their environment. Students use this understanding to help describe and understand the roles and relationships between producers, consumers and decomposers within an ecosystem and how matter is cycled within the environment. Students also explore the differences between primary succession and secondary succession in ecosystems.

Part of the Interactions in the Environment unit is having students understand the role and impact that humans play within ecosystems and how ecosystems help shape humans. Students also assess the impact of human activities and technologies on the environment and analyze ways to mitigate negative impacts and contribute to environmental sustainability.
