Description

A complete, year long mental math program that makes integrating mental math into your daily routine for just 5 minutes or less each day easy. A complete list of all strategies can be found near the beginning and shows a broad range of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division mental math strategies along with computational estimation for each operation. You can proceed in order or choose a strategy to reinforce independantly. This powerpoint file contains nearly 400 slides that directly coorelate with Nova Scotia (Canada) curriculum outcomes for Grade 6 mental math, but is easily adaptable for other grades. For each strategy, there is an introductory slide designed to illicit the strategy of focus from the students, a strategy summary which includes explicit explanations of the strategy followed by 3 practice quizzes designed to display one question at a time so you can measure student response time. Each strategy includes practice for a mix of both rational and whole numbers from the billions to hundredths places. Student practice slides are written to include words, phrases and situations that help students make connections to real life math skills. To best use right click and choose "Go to Slide" to begin a lesson or start your day with a powerbuilder. Download the free student quiz sheet with achievement ticket FREE from my items.

For those of you that download, I am currently using this and will update as errors are found or additional strategies are added through its use in my classroom. My sixth graders are really enjoying it and are performing well. Simply begin by showing students the strategy intro slide that presents several problems. Use whole class student-lead discussions on how they solved each problem to illicit the strategy that will be practiced and direct students to use the most effective strategy. Present the strategy definition slide, and then have student practice independantly by completing the powerbuilder for each strategy. Have student record their answers on the response sheet. To encourage growth have student fill in 1-3 "tickets" depending on their success that day. Collect the tickets for a small incentive draw. After completing 3 powerbuilder draw 3 names. Record score in your mark book.
