What educators are saying

Fantastic unit for a teacher without a dance background! Lessons are well laid out and there are lots of opportunities for assessment.
This is a wonderful resource to help support a dance program! it has a well structured approach and my students loved participating in the variety of activities presented within. Highly recommend.

Description

The Grade 5 Dance activity packet is aligned with the Ontario curriculum expectations for Grade 5 - The Arts. This packet reviews several of the dance concepts learned in Grade 4. This packet places specific emphasis on the element of relationship. In Grade 5, students develop and extend their understanding of the elements of body, space, time, energy, and relationship. Students are asked to transfer their understanding of topics from other subject areas and use the elements of dance to help communicate their understanding.

Elements of Dance:

The elements addressed in this packet are:

A. Body - body awareness, use of body parts, body shapes, locomotor and non-locomotor movements, body bases, symmetry vs. asymmetry, geometric vs. organic shape, angular vs. curved shape.

B. Space - levels, pathways, directions, pattern, positive vs. negative space, various group formations, proximity of dancers to one another.

C. Time - tempo, rhythm, pause, stillness, with music, without music, duration.

D. Energy - effort, force, quality.

E. Relationship - meet/part, follow/lead, emotional connections between dancers, groupings.

What lessons are included in this packet?

This packet includes 25 lessons. You can split each lesson into multiple lessons depending on how well students work with the elements and movement concepts, as well as the time each dance class allows. The lessons included in this packet are:

This packet includes 8 rubrics and 24 anecdotal records that can be used throughout this unit to assess student understanding of the elements of dance, as well as their ability to follow directions and choose appropriate movements. There are also 24 posters included in this packet that help to address the elements of dance and the different ways in which students can move.

What assessments are included in this packet?

This packet has students work on providing feedback to their peers. Students are often asked to work together with small groups of students to create dance sequences. Students, in other groups, are provided with feedback tools that they can use to help give feedback to their classmates. There is also a final activity included in this packet where students create a dance sequence using the elements of body and space, as well as a third element of their choice.

The two assignments included in this packet are:

Assignment 1.1: Dance and the Elements of Dance Reflection Journal

Assignment 1.2: Types of Dance

Is this packet very different than the other dance packets?

This packet is more in-depth than the other packets. This is because students are capable of understanding more of the purpose of each dance element. While some of the activities (movement activities) might be the same, there are a majority of them that are different. The history of dance lesson and activity set is the same one that is found in the Grade 3 and Grade 4 packets.
