What educators are saying

Thank you for this resource. It has greatly helped my planning of grade 5 science and the new curriculum changes, which can be daunting, but this was so easy to implement and saved so much time. Thank you!
Thank you for creating this resource. My students enjoyed the readings and activities during this unit. I can't wait to use it again in September!

Description

The Grade 5, Strand B: Human Health and Body Systems supplemental resource is designed to supplement your unit on Human Health and Body Systems. This resource is based on the 2022 Ontario Science curriculum expectations. While this resource features lessons, activities, readings and assessments, it is meant to be a supplemental resource.

About the Resource

This resource is designed to have students inquire about each body system found within the human body. The lessons are built on students using information gathered from their research to help them complete activities and learn about human health and the importance of our body systems. Instead of having individual lessons about each body system, students are asked to choose a body system to research in a small group. Students teach each other about their studied body systems.

Students can choose from the circulatory, digestive, nervous, muscular, respiratory, skeletal and excretory systems.

Experiments and Hands-On Activities

Due to the nature of this resource, there are no hands-on activities or experiments included.

Please be sure to view the preview of this resource for sample lessons and activities to see if this resource is the right fit for you and your students. There is no digital component included.

Lessons Included

The lessons included in this resource are meant to guide your unit. You can choose the components to use or use the resource as is. The lessons included are as follows:

  • Lesson B1: Introducing the Unit
  • Lesson B2: Human Body Systems (1)*
  • Lesson B3: Human Body Systems (2)*
  • Lesson B4: Organs
  • Lesson B5: Interrelationships
  • Lesson B6: Diseases and Disorders
  • Lesson B7: Factors Affecting Health
  • Lesson B8: Technology and Human Health
  • Lesson B9: Food Literacy
  • Lesson B10: Caring for Human Health

* These lessons are part of an inquiry-based lesson where students research and explore a chosen body system.

Q: Are there experiments included?

No, there are no experiments included. Students are also not asked to create models of each body system or organ. These are examples of activities you can choose to supplement this resource with other resources.

Q: Are there individual readings included for each body system?

There are no individual readings included for each body system. Instead, links are provided where students can learn about each body system.

Q: Are there tests included?

There are no tests or quizzes included. It has always been my goal to create resources that extend beyond repetitive activities and quizzes. Instead, students are asked to show their understanding through meaningful written responses and discussions.

Q: How are the activities and readings numbered?

Each activity and reading are numbered based on the lesson it corresponds with and the placement of the activity or reading in the lesson. For example, Activity B1.1 would align with lesson B1 and is the first activity in the lesson. Similarly, Activity B1.2 would also align with Lesson B1 and be the second activity for the lesson.

As always, this resource is ever-evolving. It will be revisited regularly and additional activities will be added.
