Description

The Grade 4, Unit 4: Human Development and Sexual Health activity packet is designed to meet both the overall and specific expectations identified in the 2019 Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum. This unit received a full update as of 08/28/19.

Focus of the Unit:

This packet focuses on the beginning changes, and social/emotional impact that puberty has for individuals. Students are not introduced to topics such as menstruation, or the reproductive system in this unit as it is focused in on for the the Grade 5 packet. Instead, this packet focuses on the general physical changes, the impact of these changes, as well as ways in which these changes can be dealt with in terms of personal care and hygiene methods.

Lessons Included:

This packet includes 6 full-length lesson plans to help meet both the overall and specific expectations. Each lesson takes approximately 1 period to complete, and has additional readings, activities, or group discussions to supplement the lesson.

Lesson 4.1: Introducing the Unit

Lesson 4.2: Physical Changes of Puberty

Lesson 4.3: Social and Emotional Changes

Lesson 4.4: Coping with Changes during Puberty

Lesson 4.5: Taking Care of Ourselves

Lesson 4.6: Bringing it Together

Activities, Readings, and Assignments:

This packet includes readings, activities and one assignment to meet the overall and specific expectations for the Human Development and Sexual Health strand. The purpose of the readings is to provide students with age-level information on puberty, and the physical changes associated with puberty.

There are 10 activities included, 3 readings, 1 assignment, 2 rubrics, as well as 2 exit cards included in this packet. Many of the lessons will include discussion questions that ask students to critically think about the information they have learned about the physical, social, and emotional changes associated with puberty.

A Note on Sensitivity:

In order to control what students are learning about in terms of puberty, and to ensure they are not exposed to information that is above their age level, readings are provided to introduce the physical changes, as well as ways in which personal care/hygiene can be accounted for. There is an option inquiry activity page included in this packet, but the lessons guide student learning as this topic tends to be sensitive. Vocabulary used in this packet mimics the vocabulary used in the curriculum document, and prepares students for what they will learn in grade 5. It is important to note that the vocabulary used includes the appropriate names for genitals (i.e., penis, vagina), as well as breasts. This is similar to the language used in the previous version of this file.
