Description

Hello colour fanatics,

We are so happy that you are taking this colour journey with us. In this booklet, you will find tons and TONS of information about the use of colour in art. You will also have the chance to practice and demonstrate your colour knowledge. We hope that you have as much fun completing our fun-packed workbook as we did making it.

Cheers to you and your creative endeavours,

Ms. Su and Ms. Price

“colour is a power which directly influences the soul” - Wassily Kandinsky

How to use the guide in your classroom:

  • We suggest using this workbook as a reference for your artists' future projects. Have students' workbooks readily available for them in their desks and encourage them to look back at their work for ideas and techniques.
  • The workbook is designed to be as flexible and multipurpose as possible. and based on the Ontario Arts Curriculum (2009). While the workbook progresses from previous concepts of Grades 1 and 2 such as warm vs. cool colours, and primary and secondary colours, it can be completed in any order. Use as a whole-class activity, as part of a choice board, as extra practice, for early finishers, or for review for students.
  • Based on your class needs and interests, here is a non-comprehensive list of how to implement this workbook in your classroom:
    • The workbook can be printed and bound together, projected on the board, or individually printed out. Depending on the materials used, keep in mind that traditional printer paper may not be ideal. For instance, if using watercolour, we suggest projecting the prompt on an overhead projector and having students use a thicker watercolour pad.
    • This workbook follows an inquiry-based approach that encourages hands-on exploration by students. We suggest letting students discover colour theory by trying it out for themselves using whatever materials you have available in your classroom and these prompts!
    • Note: some prompts benefit from the use of a colour printer to answer prompts. However, these pages can alternatively be projected digitally to show students.

  • Other ways to incorporate this workbook into your classroom beyond art block:
      • Integrate into cross-curricular instruction
        • For example, use as a prompt for writing or to connect to social studies
      • Use as a mindfulness, soft start, or transition activity for students
      • Integrate into socio-emotional learning
