Grade 2, Unit 2: Personal Safety and Injury Prevention (Ontario Health)

The Grade 2, Unit 2: Personal Safety and Injury Prevention activity packet is designed to meet both the overall and specific expectations outlined in the 2019 Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum document.

Focus of the Unit:

The purpose of this resource is to have students explore and understand the importance of personal safety and injury prevention. This packet address concepts such as enhancing personal safety in the home and when online, as well as the importance of consent and students standing up for themselves and others in order to enhance well-being and safety. Students also explore common food allergies and sensitivities and the reactions they might cause. Students also explore how to relate positively to family members, caregivers, and others and describe behaviours that can be harmful in relating to others.

Specific Expectation Addressed:

The specific expectations this resource addresses are as follows:

• D1.1: Demonstrate an understanding of practices that enhance personal safety in the home, outdoors and when online.
• D1.2: Identify common food allergies and sensitivities and the reactions they might cause.
• D2.3: Explain the importance of consent and demonstrate the ability to stand up for themselves and others, to enhance well-being and safety.
• D3.1: Describe how to relate positively to family members, caregivers, and others and describe behaviours that can be harmful in relating to others.

There are 8 lessons included in this packet. Each lesson includes a full-length lesson plan complete with three distinct parts (setting the stage, core learning activity, and lesson consolidation). The lessons included are:

There is 1 reading included in this packet along with 29 activities, 5 exit cards, 1 self-assessment tracker, and 3 rubrics. Please do not feel you have to use all lessons in the order they are presented in, or all of the lessons in general. You can pick and choose the readings, activities, and lessons you wish to do with your students as you see fit.
