Description

This unit is based on the outcomes for the Saskatchewan Health Curriculum, but will meet the outcome needs of Grade 2 Health dealing with illness and disease and the impact on personal health. There are six lesson plans that include children's literature suggestions and activity suggestions for students. There is also a word wall for feelings and a checklist of I Can Statements for this unit.

Outcomes covered:

Outcome USC2.3:

Develop an understanding of how health may be affected by illness and disease

a. Develop a common understanding and use of respectful language to talk about illness and disease (germs, medicine, vaccination, symptoms, treatment, contagious, infection)

b. Describe what being sick looks like, feels like, sounds like (fatigue, loss of appetite, aches, absent from school and activities, sad)

c. Describe how particular illnesses can be transmitted (air – coughing and sneezing; direct contact – kissing; feces – animal and human; blood products – touching a used needle)

d. Identify personal health habits that may help to prevent getting sick (wash hands, cover mouth when coughing/sneezing, immunizations, do not share personal items, tell a trusted adult if you find a needle, exercise, sleep/rest, healthy diet)

e. Investigate the signs and symptoms of common childhood illnesses ( influenza, colds, chicken pox, ear infection, asthma)

f. Differentiate between serious and non-serious illnesses and diseases (based on short/long term and the risk to health)

g. Establish that certain serious infections (including HIV and Hepatitis C) are transmitted through blood products (finding a contaminated needle)

h. Compare how a “healthy day” may differ from a “sick day”

i. Examine how to take care of self and others when sick (rest, fluids, medications as intended)
