Description
The Grade 1, Unit 3: Patterning resource is a 140+-paged unit designed to meet the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum expectations for the Algebra strand. This unit introduces students to what patterns are and focuses on the changing elements of patterns. Students learn that patterns are made up of shapes, objects, materials, numbers, and letters. This unit provides you with everything you and your students need to learn, think critically, and wonder about mathematics. Please note this is a printable resource. There is NO Google Slide component to this resource.
Wonderland Math is a math unit series designed to meet the Ontario 2020 Mathematics curriculum. Each unit features between 8 – 12 lessons. Wonderland Math is hands-on and encourages students to think critically about concepts related to math, such as addition, subtraction, number sense, etc. Let’s take a look at what the Grade 1, Unit 3: Patterning resource includes.
The Grade 1, Unit 3: Patterning resource provides lessons, activities, assessments, and hands-on practice for the following:

- Describe regularities in a variety of patterns
- Create patterns using movements, sounds, objects, shapes, letters, and numbers
- Translate patterns using movements, sounds, objects, shapes, letters, and numbers
- Determine pattern rules and use them to extend patterns
- Use pattern rules to make and justify predictions.
- Identify missing elements in patterns.
- Create patterns to illustrate relationships among whole numbers up to 50

Each Wonderland Math unit is broken down into eight sections.
Unit and Lesson Overview
In this section, you will find the unit overview with the lesson title and focus of each lesson and how the Ontario Mathematics curriculum aligns with each lesson (specific expectations only).
Lessons and Activities
This section makes up the bulk of the pages in the resource. Here you will find the lessons you need for the unit and the materials required for each lesson. Each lesson is followed by any additional materials such as activity pages, game boards, whole-group instruction pieces that are needed to carry out the specific lesson.
Learning Games and More
The Wonderland Math units are based on the recognition that hands-on experiences for students in math are important. There are additional learning games provided in this section in addition to the ones used for each of the lessons. Please note that lesson games are found in the Lessons and Activities section.
Additional Activities
This section is filled with additional practice activities and problems for students to solve. These activities are print and go, which means there is no prep needed (unless there are some cut and paste activities).
Teacher Assessment Pieces
This section is made up of assessment trackers you can use to see how students are progressing towards meeting the specific and overall expectations outlined in the math curriculum. These assessment trackers are intended to be used one-on-one.
Task Cards
This section is made up of task cards students can complete showing their understanding of Patterning. These task cards are hands-on and can be used in addition to the activities presented for each of the lessons.
Templates
This section is made up of templates that can be used for whole-group instruction or for assessment purposes.
Answer Keys
This section contains answer keys for most of the activities found in the resource. Some activities do not have an answer key as there is no one right answer, or it is dependent on the number the student chooses to work with for the activity.
