Government: Interest Group Simulation
- PDF
Description
This simulation is one of my favorite activities to run in class. In short, special interest groups will be lobbying politicians for their support in changing legislation. You may, if you would like, make this a competition between the interest groups to see which interest group can garner the most amount of support from the Congressional representatives.
The handout includes a student overview, specific instructions for the politicians and for the interest groups, the Politician's handout, 10 separate Interest Group sheets (each sheet with a different special interest group, that group's core beliefs, and what type of legislation that group is requesting the Congressional representative enact).
If you would like to include the special interest groups' political party affiliations, there is a handout for you to utilize.
Lastly, there is a classwork/HW assignment where students are to briefly research 5 special interest groups in their textbooks.
Per the class setup, it generally is best to have the Congressional representatives evenly spaced throughout the classroom (or even in the hallway). The interest groups will be rotating around from politician to politician.
