What educators are saying

This resource was a great foundation which allowed me to add necessary slides which weren't included.
Thorough resource using the new NSW units. The include PDF for Component A programming was a bonus! The layout won't be distracting for the students. Thank you - looking forward to seeing Unit 4!

    Description

This bundle includes fully-editable Google Slides (that can be downloaded as PowerPoint, pdf, etc.) to complement your teaching of the NSW Department of Education Stage 3 English Unit 3: One Small Island (Argument and Authority). There is also a PDF file for the Component A program/lessons. Outcome mapping for Component A and B is included in the DoE unit itself.

These slides are designed to be user-friendly for any classroom with an IWB or other projected screen.

For Component B, the slides are as true as possible to the original prompts, examples and LISC from the DoE unit as I could make them. Please be aware that there are certain slides that require you to insert pages from the mentor text 'One Small Island' yourself. Prompts are written directly on the slides in red text boxes that say something along the lines of 'Insert pages (first double-page spread, beginning with the text ‘Macquarie Island lies…’) from One Small Island here.'

The slides are best viewed in 'present' mode, particularly because some of the slides have answers to questions for students that will pop up AFTER students have been given a chance to discuss.

The speaker notes in the slides have also been used to put any extra, helpful information, such as the differentiation prompts for assessment (written as 'Too easy?' or 'Too hard?'- as per the DoE unit).

For Component A, The LISC (Learning Intentions and Success Criteria) have been selected from Year 5, Term 2 (early) as per the following:

Stage 3 English Scope and Sequence: https://education.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/main-education/en/home/schooling/curriculum/english/english-s3-scope-and-sequence.docx

Stage 3 Handwriting and Digital Transcription Instructional Sequence: https://education.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/main-education/en/home/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/english/documents/english-s3-handwriting-and-digital-transcription-instructional-sequence.pdf

Stage 3 Spelling Instructional Sequence: https://education.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/main-education/en/home/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/english/documents/english-s3-spelling-instructional-sequence.pdf

Lesson topics for Component A include:

    • multimodal features
    • modality and emotive language
    • graphemes (and their associated phonemes)
    • the assimilated prefixes il-, im-, in-, ir-
    • the derivational suffixes -ise and -ence/-ance
    • rhetorical devices
    • cursive handwriting (in the NSW Foundation font)
    • typing punctuation (with and without the shift key)
    • nominalisation
    • Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary for credibility and authority
    • sentence openers
