Description
PURPOSE:
This activity provides your class with a Google Slides template for hosting your own randomly-generated Codenames class games. The game was built in Google Slides so that the words used on the game board can be drawn from a catalog of words listed in another tab of the file. Present the game board to all students and provide time for them to come up with a clue that connects at least two of the words. Then, lead the class in a guessing game where students offer their clues and others try and understand the connected words at which they are hinting. Use this game on your projector as a whole group activity or assign the sheet to students for them to partner up and play their own games. Alternatively, make an entire routine out of the game; this activity works great as a daily warm up.

STORY:
Not long after I started using my Wordle Google Sheets Tech Game, I thought up another possible application of a game as an ELA warm up in class. Codenames is another greatly popular board game which I was able to mimic in Google Sheets so that the game board could be randomly generated from lists of preset words. I decided to use the Fry Sight Word List as the foundation for these gameboard words as well. Lots of great conversations have come from its use - conversations about multiple meaning words, words in context, making connections, word associations, and how we think about words.
