The purpose of this unit is for students to investigate the philosophies of time and time travel. The students will apply this information to designing their own time travel vehicle and method.

This middle-grades unit provides support for student to research philosophies of time and time travel and to design their own time travel machine as a final project to apply their research. The students will research time definitions, philosophies of time, philosophies of time travel. They will complete an experiment to assess their grasp on time, debate the ethics of time travel, and use their research to design their own time travel method and vehicle!
Use in the Classroom: This unit was designed based on my students’ high interest in the science world of time travel! It was designed for gifted and talented middle school students. I have specifically used this unit with grade 7 students, but see it appropriate for use in grades 5-8.
Unit Structure: The unit is designed with a cover page for easy photocopying as a workbook style unit. The unit is “print and go”. All workspace is included in the packet for the student to research philosophies of time and time travel and to design their final project, a futuristic time machine!
This project can be worked on daily over the course of approximately 1-2 weeks, or can become a longer-term project, depending on the frequency you meet with your students. Gifted and talented program that meet weekly or bi-weekly, may spend a number of weeks on this project. The packet allows for ease in students accessing past research for programs and units that do not cover this information daily. The format of the unit also allows it to be used as enrichment for individual students in the class. The packet can be used for differentiation for students who require additional enrichment or have a high-interest in the content.
