What educators are saying

This was a wonderful addition to my Olympic unit with my Gifted Students. They were engaged and it held their attention for the entirety of the project! I look forward to using it again next year! Thank you!

★ ★ Gifted and Talented: Design Your Own Olympic Games ★ ★

A "no prep" project based learning unit for the upper elementary students! Students work to research and design a bid to hold the next Olympic Games in a city of their choice! They will made decisions about location, city needs, development, map, and budget. They will plan a logo, mascot, medal design, torch, and torch relay plan to uniquely brand their Olympic Games. They will write a speech to convince local citizens to support their bid to be the next Olympic Games host city. Finally, they will compile these features into a digital presentation to the board to win the title of host city of the next Olympic Games!About this Product:

★Check it out!: This unit is included in the Gifted and Talented Upper Elementary Units Bundle at a discounted price!

The unit is designed with a cover page for easy photocopying as a workbook style unit. The 29 page unit is “print and go”. All workspace is included in the packet. The students will simply need the internet to complete their research and a computer for preparing a digital final presentation.

The unit guides students through researching the process of cities being chosen for the Olympic Games as well as looking at features of past Olympics. It guides the students in making decisions regarding location, development, public support, budgeting, and branding. The ultimate goal of the unit is for students to design a bid to make it as the chosen Olympic city!

Use in the Classroom:
I designed this project based learning activity to be completed by my 3rd-5th gifted and talented classes. When graduating gifted and talented 5th graders were asked to reflect on their favorite units from the past three years, they cited this project in their top three units they enjoyed!

I have used this unit around the time of both summer and winter Olympic games, or in coordination with teaching about the Olympic history. The unit is not Winter or Summer Olympics specific, so it can be used any time! Students may pick any city of their choice, but I have found that many students choose to pick local cities in their own country or a favorite city they have traveled to. You as the teacher can pre-determine the choices and have students pick cities from a hat or let students pick on their own based on interest. You can also decide to have students work independently or in small groups.

The unit leads up to the presentations, or "bids", to the Olympic committee to win $1.7 billion dollars and be the next host city!
