What educators are saying

The students LOVED doing this project. They spent time researching and putting all of the data collected together.
This was a great lesson to do with my upper students. They really enjoyed researching and learning about sports teams.

Description

★ ★ Gifted and Talented: Design Your Own Sports Franchise ★ ★

Students will plan and propose the next expansion team for a city and sport of their choice! They will follow a 19-page guided project based learning unit to make decisions about their team's location, name, logo, mascot, and stadium. They will have to persuade the expansion team planning committee and city that their team will be successful and benefit both the league and city!

Use in the Classroom: I designed this activity to be completed by my 4th-7th gifted and talented classes. The students followed the steps of the unit in the workbook. The workbook is designed to be printed prep-free and does not require a background knowledge of sports. The students are guided through stages of research and development to design portions of their proposed franchise.

Unit Structure: The unit is designed with a cover page for easy photocopying as a workbook style unit. The unit is “print and go”. All workspace is included in the packet. The unit guides students through picking a sport/city/league, researching the start of more recent franchises, proposing to the league why they should put a franchise in that city. The students will then follow steps for researching the development of names/mascots/logos and design their franchise’s name, mascot, logo, and colors. The students will then research stadiums and make decisions about their franchise’s stadium. After completing the steps, they will make presentation to persuade others that their team should be the next expansion team and that the leagues and city would benefit from this!

The unit leads up to the presentations, or "bids", to be the next expansion team in a sports league of their choice!
