Description

In the Gerrymandering & Redistricting Simulation Game, students will learn about the basics of redistricting and gerrymandering, then practice the concept on practice worksheets, before finally taking part in a fictional scenario in which they must gerrymander a map to benefit their political party.

This is a full lesson that comes with a background reading, practice worksheets, and the gerrymandering simulation. This is a great way to teach a complex concept to students and then immediately put them in the drivers seat and let them practice being the politicians and gerrymandering for themselves. Students will take on the role of either Freedom Party or Justice Party as they look to redraw district lines in their favor while also avoiding accusations of blatantly gerrymandering.

This lesson contains the following:

1. A full lesson plan aligned with Common Core Standards (docx)

2. A background reading that simplifies this complex topic (docx)

3. Practice worksheets that serve as formative assessments (docx)

4. The Gerrymandering Simulation Game (docx)

5. A Digital Map (pptx) that can be given to students so they can use "Draw" mode
