Description

Print and Play!

This NEW German escape room offers a fun way for your German language students to use their German skills in an interactive way. This German Escape Room was created for students learning German as a second language who can already read simple texts (e.g., middle school and high school). It is based on a similar product for younger children (Escape the Chocolate Factory English version), but has been modified for the German language and includes a history of chocolate production in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. If you are interested in using this product with younger students for whom German is their first language (e.g., 5. Klasse), please contact me in case you need the simpler versions of the logic puzzles.

German Escape Room: Flucht aus der Schokoladenfabrik is new for 2019. Feel free to check out the reviews for my other escape rooms.

This escape room contains five exciting puzzles that students solve in order to find a secret keyword in order to unlock the door so they can make their Flucht aus der Schokoladenfabrik!

What is the prep?

Prep involves printing. One page has 6 squares to cut out (die Drähte/the Wires) but you can have students do this as part of the activity. There are also optional hint cards you can print and cut out. No other prep is necessary! All of the instructions are in English, but the puzzles are completely in German.

Will I have to buy anything extra?

No, you do NOT need any fancy locks or to use any Google forms.

What supplies are needed?

Paper (8.5in x 11in)

A color printer (if you do not have access to a color printer you can use this in black and white with some coloring by hand).

Scissors

Optional: Markers or similar

What will my students do?

Working in small groups of 3-6, your students will cooperate to solve 5 puzzles to find the secret 5-letter word and escape the Chocolate Factory. If you are a homeschooler a single child can complete this, but it may take longer and/or require more hints.

First, students will take a worksheet for students to write down the solutions they find. This has a brief backstory (in German) detailing how they became trapped in an abandoned chocolate factory. They must find 5 letters and unscramble a word to unlock the door. The solution of each puzzle reveals a new letter. The puzzles are:

Chocolate Crossword Puzzle: Students will read two paragraphs about the history of chocolate production in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Then, they will complete crossword puzzle questions in German to test their understanding of that passage. Some of the crossword squares are highlighted. The letters from these squares reveal a clue to the target letter. Tip: you may also assign the text as homework the day before the escape room.

Soduko-Style Logic Puzzle: Students will read the rules of this Sudoku-style puzzle in German and then work together to solve the puzzle. Technically, students do not need to complete the entire Sudoku; they only need to determine which colored praline goes in the marked spot. Each colored praline is assigned a letter and one is the target letter for this puzzle.

Cipher Puzzle: Students will work together to decipher an encryption on an order form using a cipher key. The decoded message will help them find the solution in the German text at the top of the order form.

Chocolate Fountain Puzzle: This puzzle asks students “Welches Gefäss wird sich zuerst füllen?” Students will look closely to identify which tank will fill first to reveal the target letter.

Tangled wires puzzle: Students will determine which of “Die Drähte” fit the chocolate-making machine. Next, they will follow one particular wire to find the target letter.

How long does this take?

About 40-50 minutes.
