Description

This activity contains two investigations.

First Investigation:

• On the graph provided, students graph each of the pairs of points and draw a line through the pair of points.

• The students study the two lines and conjecture that the two lines are parallel.

• Then the students find the slope of the two given lines to notice that when the lines were parallel the slope of the two lines are equal.

• Students repeat these three steps with four more points.

• After students know that two parallel lines will have the same slope, they are challenged to draw one line and then through a point they must graph a line second line that is parallel to a given line.

Second Investigation;

• On the graph provided, students graph each of the pairs of points and draw a line through the pair of points.

• The students study the two lines and conjecture that the two lines are perpendicular.

• Then the students find the slope of the two given lines to notice that when the lines were perpendicular the slope of the two lines are opposite reciprocals.

• Students repeat these three steps with four more points.

• After students know that two perpendicular lines will have slopes that are opposite reciprocals, they are challenged to draw one line and then through a point they must graph a line second line that is perpendicular to a given line.

A complete set of solutions are included.

Comments from buyers:

  • Great supplement activity!
  • Great material
  • good investigation
  • This is a concept that for some reason my Algebra 1 students struggle with. However, with investigating the topic, they do learn the concept better than just with the regular lesson.
