Note: The activities in this product are based on the viewing of the video, "Flatland, a Journey of Many Dimensions" which is not included in this product. The video can be purchased from Flatworld Productions or amazon, or may be available through a local library. The website for the movie is www.flatlandthemovie.com.

This resource includes the following geometry enrichment components:

♦ Discussion of dimensions in space (after viewing the video)

♦ Exploration of hypercubes (four-dimensional cubes)

♦ Cross-sectioning of spheres and cubes and identifying the shapes of the cross-sections

♦ Determining the sum of the interior angles of polygons and the measurement of each angle in a regular polygon

"Flatland, A Journey of Many Dimensions" is a short, visually-appealing movie based on the novel, "Flatland, A Romance of Many Dimensions" by Edwin Abbott Abbott which was published in 1884. It is the story of a two-dimensional world in which some of the inhabitants are introduced to the third dimension. It challenges viewers to question the limitations of reality, perhaps to consider the possibility of higher dimensions.

Higher-level thinking makes this a perfect activity for a gifted/talented math class or Math Club, but it can be enjoyed by all math students. One of the activities supports geometry standards 7G.3 and G-GMD.4.

Further enrich this activity by constructing 4-dimensional hypercubes! Impossible? Not with step-by-step instructions and photographs by the very clever SamizdatMath. Check out his plans at The Fourth Dimension: Hypercube, Tesseract Cut-Outs! Easy Peasy 4-D Models

Another fun, yet challenging activity for a Math Club is Four Fours, an Expression-writing Challenge. This competitive game can also be enjoyed in the general math classroom - secondary students LOVE competition!
